Plumber in the Perth CBD, Northbridge, East Perth and West Perth

Northbridge was freshwater swamp until convict labour started draining it in the 1860s, and the hotels that went up there in the 1890s gold rush are still trading on that reclaimed ground. West Perth began as a suburb for wealthy merchants and politicians before offices pushed most of the houses out. East Perth’s gasworks, power station and rail yards were turned into the state’s largest inner-city renewal project from 1991.

The short answer

Yes, McDermott Plumbing covers the Perth CBD, Northbridge, East Perth and West Perth for licensed plumbing and gas: leaks and burst pipes, blocked drains and toilets, hot water repairs and replacements, leak detection and gas fitting, for apartments, offices and small tenancies. Call (08) 6187 3999 or text 0406 882 648. We’re based in Ellenbrook, so the city is a run south-west, and we’ll give you a real ETA when you ring.

Northbridge and the CBD

Perth was founded in 1829, and the 1890s gold rush took its population from roughly 8,500 in 1881 to about 61,000 in 1901. A lot of what was built in that rush is still here. In Northbridge the swamp drainage that began in the 1860s made room for permanent buildings, and hotels such as the Great Western (1896, now the Brass Monkey) went up to house prospectors. Northbridge was officially gazetted as its own suburb only in 1982, after being known informally as ‘north of the line’, and post-war European migration in the 1950s and 60s built the restaurant, café and bar strip that defines it now.

The Perth City Link project sank a section of the railway so Northbridge and the CBD now join up through Yagan Square, which opened in 2018. The result is a tight mix of commercial, public and residential property, with heritage hotels sitting beside newer apartment towers.

West Perth and East Perth

West Perth was once an enclave for wealthy merchants and politicians. It is now an inner mixed zone, mostly office blocks that displaced residential buildings, with Hay Street as the main commercial strip and streets such as Colin, Ord and Outram carrying a mix of offices and high-density residential. It has a relatively high proportion of medical specialists compared with the CBD. The Watertown outlet complex and City West sit where the Perth Metropolitan Markets operated from 1929 to 1989.

East Perth was industrial for much of the early twentieth century, home to the gas works, the power station and the railway yards and engine sheds. From the early 1980s most of the old houses west of Lord Street became commercial premises, and the East Perth Redevelopment Authority was set up in 1991 to rebuild the suburb around Claisebrook Cove. At the 2016 Census East Perth had 10,596 people.

What we see in the city and inner suburbs

Age, strata and access shape most of the jobs here:

  • Apartment towers and strata blocks: shared stacks, risers and meter rooms. A leak or blockage often involves a neighbour or the building manager, so we check who authorises the work and what access, parking or lift booking you need before we arrive.
  • Older buildings in Northbridge and the western CBD that have been converted: original supply pipes and wastes joined to new bathrooms and kitchens. We look at what is actually behind the wall before we talk about a fix.
  • Office and small tenancy amenities in West Perth and the CBD: leaking taps and cisterns, blocked toilets and basins, and hot water for kitchenettes. After-hours or weekend access is common, so tell us about building induction and security.
  • Cafés, bars and restaurants in Northbridge: blocked floor wastes and kitchen lines. We clear blockages and fix leaks; we don’t pump out grease traps, which is a liquid-waste contractor’s job.
  • Medical suites and consulting rooms in West Perth: hot water, handbasins and leaks in tenancies that can’t be out of action for long.

Common questions

Which suburbs does this page cover?
The Perth CBD, Northbridge, East Perth and West Perth. Mount Lawley, North Perth and Leederville, and Bayswater and Maylands have their own pages, and so do Subiaco and Nedlands. If you’re not sure, call (08) 6187 3999 with the address.
Our apartment has a leak that seems to come from the unit above. What should we do?
Turn off what you can inside your unit, tell the building manager and your strata company, and call us. Whether the fault is inside a lot or in a shared pipe decides who is responsible, so we’ll tell you what we find and who the report should go to.
Can you work after hours in a CBD building?
Often, yes, for licensed plumbing and gas work. Tell us about building induction, security, lift bookings and parking when you book, and we’ll give you a real ETA rather than a promise we can’t keep.
Do you clear grease traps for Northbridge cafés and restaurants?
No. Pumping out a grease trap is a liquid-waste contractor’s job. We clear kitchen-line and floor-waste blockages and repair leaks, and we’ll tell you when a problem is a trap that needs pumping.
How far is the CBD from your base?
It’s a run south-west from Ellenbrook into the city. Traffic changes a lot through the day, so we’ll give you a real time when you ring.
